Radu Termure's shelter
We'd like to introduce you to an extraordinary man...
Even as a child, Radu was a protector of helpless animals. Today, he has swapped his life as successfull businessman in the years that followed the fall of the communist regime, for a life fully dedicated to stray animals.
Radu has never turned his back on a dog or cat in need of help.
But in recent years, the number of dogs in his shelter has increased tremendously. This is partly as a consequence of the 2013 law in Romania which legalised the catching and killing of straydogs.
Every time a dog or cat is in danger, simply because of an accident, or cruelty, or simply abandoned, individuel citizens or local authorities call him for help.
In 2004 the new mayor of Cluj-Napoca changed the strategy of the municipality towards straydogs drastically. The dogs were captured and locked up in the city shelter where they died of hunger and lack of care, or following a deadly injection directly in their heart.
Along the years, Radu Termure has bought hundreds of dogs form the city shelter to save them from death.
In this period, Radu began to rent space to be able to house his animals. Since 2006 he rents an old cattle breeding facility where the animals now stay.
Approximately 900 dogs and 50 cats live under Radu's protection.
Without any support from the Romanian government or local authorities, he has, along the years, exhausted his own resources. He has sold all his possessions in order to be able to keep the animals safe and alive.
Every month, Radu faces many bills, rent of the farm, food, water, vets ... From time to time he gets help from a labourer who must also be paid. When he won't be able to pay anymore, his shelter will be closed and his animals destined for death.
20 hours per day, 7 days a week, Radu works for the daily care of all dogs and cats, vet costs, special care for the puppies and kittens, for the sick dogs and cats... the constant search for affordable feed.
Until 2012 he worked with Teresa Szekely with whom he managed the shelter.
On october 24th 2012 the shelter was hit by a fire and Teresa Szekely lost her life while trying to save the life of as many dogs and cats as possible.
Radu Termure had rebuilt the shelter as well as possible with his own hands and means. Several organisations have given him a hand after the fire but there is still a lot to be done. Since then, he deals with all this, mostly alone; few labourers bear the work of the very long days.
Because the shelter doesn't have any running water, electricity or gas, he must ensure water delivery with a tanker truck. When he is lucky, he can get 12000 liters per delivery. This costs up to 200€ per delivery. He fills the water tanks in six buildings by hand. The water is distributed with watering cans and wheelbarrows. When the deliveries cannot take place, Radu is forced to collect water in the city suburbs, 1200 l for 2 or 3 days...
The dry feed that he can buy thanks to donations is insufficient to feed all the animals, the main meal consists of raw meat bought from local abbatoirs mixed with the dry food.
With the help and intervention of a small and dedicated group, adoptions are organised, for the moment mostly in Germany, sometimes in Great-Britain. An adoption procedure following a house visit ensures that the animals are destined to a good future life.
How long can this extraordinary man still hold?
Radu has never refused an animal in need but he now needs urgently our help!
Let us show him that he is not alone.

Don't let the time stand still
"I just love my adopted rescued dogs. They make me happy and I hope I make them happy. They were saved from a miserable life only because I offered them my home and my heart. I accepted them just the way they are. The same way they had to accept me..."Karen For more than 10 years now, a man has been fighting for the life of every dog that he can save in a country that hunts them down to kill them. In het voetspoor van een grote dame
Dagboek van Katrien Carmen Andres de Gallego, een dame met een héél groot hart voor dieren en laatste hoop op redding voor de viervoeters in Sagunto en omliggende dorpen.
